August, my 9 year old, is home sick from school today. It is nothing serious, but definitely worth keeping him home under quarantine and observation.
Since he is older, he is able to watch certain things that I (and most parents) feel is inappropriate for the younger kids. Unfortunately, with one television in the house, opportunities for him to watch these types of movies and television programs are not nearly as often as he would like.
When he is home sick, however, tradition dictates he is allowed to sit in bed with a laptop and watch videos that are appropriate for him but not the others. Previous entries in this series have included Clash Of The Titans (1981 version), the entire Superman film franchise, Harry Potter, The Neverending Story, Diary Of A Wimpy Kid, Disney’s Atlantis, and more.
Today he started out with The Iron Giant. In a change of pace he has the Kindle Fire upstairs with him and he is watching stuff from Amazon Prime Instant Video.
When I took Déla to school this morning I stopped by August’s classroom and picked up some homework. I know, I’m a mean dad. After The Iron Giant August did his homework and then began watching Dragonslayer. He really enjoyed that film, and is now (as of this writing) beginning to watch The Magic Sword.
I love being able to share some of these movies from my own childhood with August. He enjoys and appreciates them for what they are.

Great post! I used to love “movies for sickness” growing up. Actually, I still do now! I’m with you on sharing the movies I grew up watching with my son. We recently watched all the 3 original Star Wars movies. Can’t wait until he is a bit older and we can watch the Harry Potter and Hobbit movies!
Thanks! I may wind up having to subscribe to Netflix or something to find some of the other movies I used to watch. Usually bad science fiction stuff and musicals. Then there’s the television shows like Thunderbirds and Kung Fu – I am such a dork, because this is what I am excited to share…
LOL! I can top that: I just purchased the ENTIRE Land of the Lost series from the 70′s! My son and I watch an episode or two every weekend! I am having so much fun enjoying them again and watching my son enjoy all that cheesiness for the first time!
I used to watch that and the original Wendy & Marvin episodes of Super Friends. Have both on DVD (and a bunch of other 70s Saturday Morning stuff – Space Academy, Mission Magic, etc.)
SUPER FRIENDS?!?!? That’s my next purchase!
