My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic – A Dash Of Awesome (DVD)

mlp dash awesomeAt times Shout Factory releases a DVD of “My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic” with a theme – and for this release it is the pony Rainbow Dash. My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic – A Dash Of Awesome collects 5 episodes centering on this one pegasus pony.

I’ve gone into how positive a show “My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic” is, and how it doesn’t condescend or dumb down the content for its audience. I won’t go into that again. I will say both my 6 and 10 year old sons were interested in watching this video along with my 8 year old daughter. “My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic” is, in my opinion, one of the better shows being broadcast today for kids.

This DVD contains 2 episodes from the latest season and three from season two. While most of these DVD mix up the episodes, none have been on DVD before (unless you count the season two DVD set). Here’s a list of the episodes:

May The Best Pet Win!

The Mysterious Mare Do Well

Read it and Weep

Daring Don’t

Rainbow Falls

Rainbow Dash is athletic and competitive. You could consider her a “jock” and at times this can put her at odds with her friends. It is, however, not her defining characteristic and these episodes help to showcase how deep the writers are going with fleshing out their characters. Sure, it’s a half hour cartoon series, this isn’t a Charlotte Bronte novel. Still, there is complexity on display here that most cartoons “for girls” don’t put in and by focusing on one character for a DVD viewers can see that. This is really evident in the episode May The Best Pet Win. Rainbow Dash’s competitive nature really comes through in the last episode Rainbow Falls, and also serves as a lesson of honesty and loyalty.

This DVD release doesn’t replace the full season sets (Hey, Shout Factory, where are my season 2 and 3 sets?) but does serve to get others hooked into the series. Entertaining, engaging, and positive, “My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic” hits another home run with this DVD release – A Dash Of Awesome.
