LEGO Nexo Knights Season 2 (DVD)

LEGO Nexo Knights Season 2 (DVD)

What is it about this show I like so much?

I mean, it’s a fun, silly show that is aimed at kids, but I am enjoying the heck out of it.

Maybe it is the fact there are no pretensions about trying to be something it isn’t. LEGO Nexo Knights follows the adventures of some newly minted knights as they defend their king and kingdom against the (sometimes hilariously inept) attempts by Jestro to take over. Now armed with some experience the NEXO Knights are up for some bigger challenges, which is a good thing because Jestro’s Book Of Monsters is not exactly getting weaker.

In the first of ten episodes the team goes back to the academy for further training.  This sets up a situation where the knights wind up protecting another spellbook from falling into Jestro’s hands, but he does wind up with a different prize, one that proves bothersome but ultimately it is the Book Of Monsters that keeps acting as a thorn in the side of the NEXO Knights.

The final three episode of this season form one major story and proves just how good this series can be. While there are still gags, it is the extended plotting and multiple motivations that demonstrate how a show for kids can be smart and clever. Yes, there is a lot of juvenile humor present, but overall this is a series that I enjoy watching because it is better than simply using cheap gag after cheap gag and the characters are beginning to be fleshed out a bit.

Season two is an improvement over the first in terms of storytelling. Visually it is the same, which isn’t saying much of anything. It looks good and does what it is supposed to. The lack of special features is disappointing, but it’s a kids’ DVD of a kids’ show, so expectations were low in that regard.

Apparently a third season is on the horizon and I’m not upset by that. I look forward to more of these episodes. I just hope the writers are working towards an actual conclusion to this storyline.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the DVD I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own.
