Not only does this album not register in BeatleSongs and Tell Me Why, it isn’t part of the official Capitol releases. Why? Because it was a Canadian release. The Canadian versions of the Beatles records were different up to this point. After this album, they would match the U.S. versions. Technically, this was meant to mirror The Beatles Second Album somewhat. Even the cover designs are similar. Some of the songs are on both albums (“I Call Your Name”) though some on this album (“Misery”) are not on the other and vice versa (“She Loves You”).
Why am I bothering with this album? Well, I do have it. It is an artifact of just how disparate the various releases were. There was a time when I wanted to own as many of the different releases as possible, such as the various Canadian releases that are different, then the U.K. and U.S. releases, as well as editions of singles, and whatnot. Now that the release alignment has shifted to globally match the U.K. releases, all I want now are the various songs that aren’t in either mono or stereo box set.
There are some interesting releases, such as the Portuguese copy of Magical Mystery Tour, which omits the gatefold sleeve. However, my days of obtaining different variations of Beatles albums are over. I still do have a variety of albums, and I’m not sure I want to get rid of them. Some I simply will never get rid of, such as my copy of Introducing The Beatles, or Hey Jude. This is one of those albums that may eventually find its way out of my collection, and I’m not sure how I feel about that.
